Polish - Canadian Automotive Conference: Innovations and Supply Chains

We are excited to bring the automotive industry from Poland and Canada together on a digital platform first time ever and run keynotes and panel discussions between companies representing cutting-edge automotive technologies.

The conference is organized by Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) and Trade Commissioners of the Embassy of Canada to Poland in partnership with Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association of Canada (APMA) and Polish Automotive Industry Association (PZPM).

Most of the conference will consist of panels broadcasted live on Zoom and streamed on Facebook and YouTube channels of PAIH. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions online during the panels.

For 2 days representatives of companies, academia and automotive organizations from Poland and Canada will share their expertise and their point of view on the themes which have today become essential subjects in the automotive industry and on the market: The mobility of tomorrow, technological and digital transitions, new directions of technology development, new technology supply chains, green technologies, car batteries, alternative fuels and many others.

This is definitely a place to be for every automotive professional and great opportunity to learn about innovation, industry trends, and shared experiences from automotive OEMs, suppliers, and partners in Poland and Canada.

Following up on the event direct contacts between Polish and Canadian companies will be facilitated by the organizers.

A manager with many years of experience in both government administration and the private sector, but also in non-profit non-governmental organizations.

In February 2021, he was appointed the Chairman of PAIH. Before joining the Agency, as the Director of the Department of Supervised and Subordinate Units, he was in charge of entities subordinate to the Ministry of Development, Labor and Technology.

Previously, he was a member of the board of the Wa�brzych Special Economic Zone, where from 2016 he was responsible, inter alia, for investments, finances and controls, as well as cooperation with institutes of higher education and universities. Over the four years of his tenure, more than 90 companies joined the Wa�brzych zone, including such significant investors as: Mercedes-Benz, Umicore, GTHR, LS, and Hongbo Clean Energy. During this time, the expenditure incurred in the zone increased by PLN 6 billion, exceeding PLN 30 billion in total.

In the past, Krzysztof Drynda was an advisor to the Minister for the economy. He was also professionally related to the financial sector and ran his own business in this field. Moreover, for many years he has been an active member of non-governmental organizations.
Krzysztof Drynda is a graduate of the Faculty of Electronics from the Wroc�aw University of Technology and is a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

He was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
Canadian Hydrogen Fuel Cell Association (CHFCA) - Mr. Mark Kirby, President & CEO

Mark Kirby, President and CEO, is a seasoned chemicals and clean technology executive with a decade of experience in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector. Mr. Kirby has held leadership positions at Ballard Power Systems, where he managed the $100 million divesture of the company’s automotive fuel cell business to Daimler and Ford, as well as Questair Technologies.

Formerly President and CEO of Fortress Advanced Bioproducts, the biotechnology division of Fortress Global Enterprises, Mr. Kirby laid the groundwork for a Canadian biorefinery demonstration project with over $30 million of government support. He also co-founded S2G Biochemicals where he was responsible for raising millions in government and private funding support while developing strategic partnerships to position the company’s technology for commercialization. In addition, Mr. Kirby was responsible for integrating acquisitions and growing new global business for a $100 million division of Praxair. Mr. Kirby currently serves as a member of the board of directors at HTEC. He holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of British Columbia.
Hendrik Taulin, Regional Coordinator FDI Central & Eastern Europe and Senior Investment Officer, Embassy of Canada to Germany

For the past 15 years, Hendrik Taulin has been working as the Senior Investment Officer at the Canadian Embassy in Berlin, Germany. In this function, he is focussed on providing project-based foreign direct investment (FDI) and site selection counselling to German and European companies on their projects in Canada, as well as giving strategic advice to Canadian public organisations and companies, that would like to position themselves in Europe.

Mr. Taulin holds a British and German degree in Business Administration from Lancaster University and ESB Reutlingen, Germany. Prior to joining the Embassy, he worked in private sector management consulting with a special focus on Corporate Finance, M&A, restructuring and market entry strategies, mainly in Eastern European countries.

As a result of his career so far, he possesses an in-depth experience in several industries crucial to the Canadian and German economy such as aerospace & defence, energy, oil & gas, commodities, manufacturing.

In addition to his work for the Canadian government, Mr. Taulin has been a lecturer for several years at universities in his hometown Berlin, focussing on business affairs. In his leisure time he travels all over the world and acts as the CFO of a soccer club.
Mr. Engler looks back at almost 24 years of advising European investment prospects on all aspects of site selection in Canada, from providing value propositions, cost analyses, to counselling on financing options and incentive packages.

An award-winning Canadian Trade Commissioner and Senior Investment Counsellor, Mr. Engler is a well-known strategist combining theoretical concepts of foreign direct investment attraction with the experience of counselling senior executives of hundreds of European investors.

Since 2009, Mr. Engler has held various university teaching assignments in international business, foreign direct investment attraction and site selection management, most notably at the Berlin University of Technology and Business Administration (HTW Berlin).

Prior to his current position, Mr. Engler held executive positions with private-sector consulting institutions, focusing on regional and international economic development.
Recognized for his technical expertise as well as his vision, Pierre has numerous years’ experience in the development of high-tech products.

Upon graduating from university in 1991, he joined CML Technologies, where very early on, his ability to manage projects in a pragmatic and efficient manner became clear. He quickly moved up the corporate ladder, while developing his management skills. Pierre has also designed a number of innovative, adaptable, practical, and robust products that are used worldwide in strategic applications such as emergency dispatch and air traffic control, and he holds several patents for his work. He then continued his career at Adept Technology Canada and at DAP Technologies before joining the LeddarTech team in 2010.

Pierre holds a degree in electrical engineering from Universit� Laval and is a member of the Ordre des ing�nieurs du Qu�bec.

LeddarTech is a leader in environmental sensing platforms for autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance systems. Founded in 2007, LeddarTech has evolved to become a comprehensive end-to-end environmental sensing company by enabling customers to solve critical sensing and perception challenges across the entire value chain of the automotive and mobility market segments. With its LeddarVision™ sensor-fusion and perception platform and its cost-effective, scalable, and versatile LiDAR development solution for automotive-grade solid-state LiDARs based on the LeddarEngine™, LeddarTech enables Tier 1-2 automotive system integrators to develop full-stack sensing solutions for autonomy level 1 to 5. These solutions are actively deployed in autonomous shuttles, trucks, buses, delivery vehicles, smart cities/factories, and robotaxi applications. The company is responsible for several innovations in cutting-edge automotive and mobility remote-sensing applications, with over 95 patented technologies (granted or pending) enhancing ADAS and autonomous driving capabilities.
Jakub Fary� - from 2002 President of PZPM, the organization of the NGO sector, that since then has become the largest Polish automotive industry employers' organization for manufacturers of motor vehicles, motorcycles, mopeds and motorized four-wheelers, as well as manufacturers of vehicle bodies, trailers, semi-trailers, parts or components of motor vehicles for original assembly in Poland. He supports activities for the development and promotion of Polish automotive sector. As the head of PZPM involved in the work of the governmental and the parliamentary committees; provides the most relevant opinions on draft legal acts concerning the automotive industry. Representing the interests of member companies in the organs the European Union - incl. the European Parliament and the European Commission.

Acting as the President of the Polish Automotive Industry Association (PZPM) for 17 years has been elected the President of the Liaison Committee ACEA - a body that brings together presidents of automotive organizations from 30 European countries (associated members) and operates in the ACEA structure alongside ordinary members, which are all European automotive concerns.
Francis Dorsemaine is the Counsellor (Commercial) and Senior Trade Commissioner at the Embassy of Canada to Poland.

Overseas, he has previously served as Counsellor (Commercial) and Regional Senior Trade Commissioner based out of the High Commission of Canada in Nairobi, Kenya; First Secretary (Commercial) and Head of Investment Attraction at the Embassy of Canada to China; Vice-Consul and Trade Commissioner at the Consulate General of Canada in Mumbai, India.

Mr Dorsemaine has also held a number of positions within Global Affairs Canada (Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Development) including Chief of Staff to the Assistant Deputy Minister for Sub-Saharan Africa, Deputy Director for the European Bilateral Relations and Advocacy, Deputy Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Relations, as well as working on issues such as international financing, venture capital and private equity, trade missions strategy and planning, and business sector support.

He holds a Masters of Business Administration from Rutgers Business School (2011) and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia (2001).

A proven professional with an advanced accounting degree from Humber College and a BA in Finance from the Ted Rogers School of Business at Ryerson University in Toronto. As an entrepreneur and a strong leader, he founded his first company while studying at the university. He has held various positions in business and banking, both in the public and private sectors. Prior to his current position as head of the overseas trade office in Canada, he worked as an advisor to commercial and retail clients at Canada's largest bank. He has been a volunteer of many non-profit organizations, including "YPCPA" - Association of Young Polish Canadian Canadian Professionals, and is still a participant in many organizations, including Princess Margaret Cancer Hospital, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada and the Toronto Humanitarian Society of Animals. Privately, a fitness enthusiast who loves good food, motorbikes, nature and spending time with his family and two dogs.
Creator of the Triggo vehicle concept, author of Triggo patents, co-founder and president of the management board of Triggo S.A.

He was born in Krak�w in 1974. Graduate of Secondary School Jan III Sobieski in Krakow. He studied Applied Mathematics at the Cracow University of Technology and ICT at the French-Polish School (EFP) in Pozna�. He obtained a diploma at the French IMT Atlantique in the field of ICT networks.

He started his professional career in 1998 in Brussels, at Ebone - the operator of the first European backbone of the Internet network. As part of this company, in 2002 he moved to Budapest, where he was responsible for the construction of the Ebone infrastructure in Central Europe. He continued this work until 2005 as part of the GTS Central Europe ICT group separated from the company.

In the years 2005-2011 he was the Vice President for Operations in the Polish branch of the group - GTS Polska, where he was responsible for all current technical operating activities, the entire cost sphere of the operator's activity, expansion of the network infrastructure and capital expenditure. He was also responsible for critical aspects of operational integration as a result of the acquisition of Energis Polska by GTS Polska and the creation of GTS Energis - the largest provider of ICT services for business in Poland (currently part of the T-mobile group). The operational integration process achieved or exceeded all KPI targets in less time than assumed.

In 2010, based on his non-professional passions and experiences, he created the concept of Triggo - as it later turned out - the world's first successful combination of car and two-wheeler capabilities. In the same year, he submitted his first patent applications for his invention to the European Patent Office.

In the years 2012-2015 he was the Vice President, Network Operations at GTT Communications. He was responsible for the overall technical operational sphere of Europe's largest Internet and data backbone today, connected to a network of 12 data centers on the continent, handling a significant portion of Europe's Internet, data and voice traffic.

At the end of 2015, he left this function to be able to fully focus on the development of his original idea - Triggo. Together with business angels - Anna and Wojciech Apel - he founded the company Triggo S.A. for this purpose.

He is a father of two children, he is passionate about off-road and motorcycle travel, he is an airplane pilot and a sailor.
Marcin Fabianowicz manages the PAIH Investment Center team, whose main tasks include acquiring direct foreign investments and supporting companies located in Poland in their operations and development. During his almost four years of activity at PAIH, Marcin supported the most significant projects of global companies such as LG Chem, PSA Group, Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles, AT&T, Faurecia, and SK Group.

In recent years, the Agency has supported almost 900 investment projects from various sectors, such as BSS, Automotive, e-Mobility, R&D, Aviation, Machine Manufacturing, Food Processing, and many others, including the most prominent projects of global companies. The Agency supports over 190 potential investment projects, which may create over 40 thousand jobs with CAPEX of nearly EUR 10 billion.

Marcin graduated from international relations and interdisciplinary European studies at the University of Warsaw. He also studied at the University of Cyprus, gaining expertise in international law. Before joining the PAIH team, he accumulated experience in private financial companies, the public sector, and NGOs.
Adam Ha�derek - FOUNDER & CEO Handerek Technologies Ltd.

Inventor and scientist with more than 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur in Poland and Germany. Author of numerous patents, patent applications and publications. He received numerous awards for his achievements in the field of recycling technology.

In the 1980s, he founded one of the first Ltd. companies in Poland (PPUH Krylateks), where, employing over 100 people, and implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Heavy Organic Synthesis innovative technology of the cryamin foam.

In the 1990s, he operated on the German market as the owner and president of the trading company H&H GbR Schweinfurt exercising control over GZMK GmbH. Then he started managing the implementation department of the technology of transesterification of higher fatty acids with the use of acid catalysts at Jenamethyl GmbH, in cooperation with PKN Orlen.

In 2006, he moved to the R&D department of Liquidsun AG Jena, where he began working on recycling technologies for waste polyolefins. He developed the recycling technologies for waste polyolefins at Enerfoil Vertriebs GmbH. In 2015, he started his own research activity under the Recycling Technologies Adam Ha�derek. Finally in 2018, he created Ha�derek Technologies Sp. z o. o., where, as the Vice President of the Management Board, he sets the directions for the company's development.
Since 16 years, he has been associated with e-mobility industry. He is a specialist in designing and implementing Li-ion battery systems and has managed numerous projects in that field, carried out by the company since the beginning of its existence. These projects have resulted in the implementation and commercialisation of our products all over the world, including for such clients as Citroen, Bosch, SAM Group, Smith Electric Vehicles, Solaris Bus & Coach, Ursus, Vosloh Kiepe, Voith, Temsa and KTM. He led research and development projects in international consortiums such as TAILORWELD, TOLPE and KORANET. He is an author and coauthor of a numbers patents, trademarks and unique technical solutions in area of electromobility, Li-ion batteries, fuel cells and system control. He graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology, where he also gained his Ph.D. title, and completed the ICAN Institute training (Harvard Management Course).
Tomasz has gained experience over the last decade working in the Energy Sector as an innovation manager. From the very beginning he was in the ecosystem of innovations. His field of expertise are battery electric vehicles, charging infrastructure, micro renewable energy source systems, alternatives fuels, storage systems, innovative product for utilities (smart grid ready). He has been working on development on many start-up ideas until he crossed to the other side and became start-up’er himself. He founded company Hydrogen First LLC where Tomasz is a CEO. Tomasz knows that there plenty of ideas but only those who succeed on commercial market and found their customers are memorable and beneficial.
I am a graduate of the University of Economics in Pozna� (Poland) and MBA studies at Aalto University (Finland). I am also an alumnus of a prestigious Swedish Institute Management Programme Northern Europe.

I started my business career in 2008, in the investor relations and capital markets department of a PBG company, at that time the largest oil & gas EPC company in CEE. A company from WIG20 index on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (index of the largest and most liquid companies in Poland). In the period of 2008 and 2012 I have been responsible for stock and bonds transactions worth over PLN 1 billion. Over the last decade I have gone in that company through the whole career ladder and finished as a member of the management board.

In 2014 I have simultaneously joined RAFAKO, a daughter company of PBG. I rebuilt a whole investor relations department and regained trust of the capital markets for RAFAKO. One year later, in 2015, I was in charge of SPO without pre-emptive rights, gained EUR 25mn from the market and acquired largest Polish pension and private investment funds as shareholders. In year 2017, I was in charge of a second SPO with pre-emptive rights, gained EUR 45mn and this time acquired largest Polish fund PFR as a strategic shareholder.

In the meantime, in 2016 I established electromobility department in RAFAKO and invented innovative electric city bus with batteries entirely in the floor, called RAFAKO E-BUS. Together with my team I have designed, produced, certified, homologated and commercialized the product and in late 2020 I have finalized an acquisition of the project by Industrial Development Agency (ARP SA) which became strategic investor. The product has changed its name for ARP e-Vehicles and I am currently a vice-president of the management board in this company.

In 2018 I started also to be a head of innovation department in RAFAKO. I was initiating and coordinating the innovative activity of the company. I was searching for new market areas, did market research and product development in the fields of renewable energy sources, including PV, onshore and offshore wind; energy storage systems; hydrogen technologies and nuclear energy. I was also cooperating with start-ups, accelerators as well as VC/PE funds.

Besides above-mentioned roles, I have been working for many years closely with InnoEnergy, entity under European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT). I have been actively participating in the activities of the European Battery Alliance under the wings of the European Commission where I was the first Polish person who joined this initiative and brought on board a few other big Polish companies. For two years I was an expert in Horizon2020 at EASME. Recently I have been also involved in the venture capital market, especially in shaping the VC market in Poland. I am supporting star-ups from Europe, US and Latin America as a mentor in the field of renewable energy, energy storage and electromobility and support such organizations as Solar Impulse Foundation and Unknown Group.

Wojciech Chrzanowski (CEO / CTO & Founder of AR Solutions) - engineer and manager with strong experience in the energy industry, supervising work on drilling platforms around the world, responsible for implementation and optimization of processes using new technologies. Was responsible for many projects related to operational risk assessment, employee supervision and safety, while optimizing processes, striving to reduce time and cost. Implemented efficiency and optimization solutions that reduced the operating time by an average of 60%. Based on personal experience and passion for ICT, the idea was born to create an AR Solutions. He is the main person responsible for product development and strategic support for key customers.
Magdalena Chrzanowska (COO & Co-Founder) - a sociologist with many years of experience as a project manager, team leader and trainer in the financial industry, where she served projects for countries from around the world being responsible for compliance, SLA and creating effective process flows. She is also actively involved in social projects and activities for NGOs. At AR Solutions, she is responsible for the creative concept and branding, as well as marketing strategy and promotion. She is working on establishing key partnerships, cooperating with AR equipment producers and suppliers, and monitoring the team's work. She is also responsible for maintaining contacts with the client, preparing offers, reports and analyzes up to the client's needs.

Li-Cycle’s Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Kunal Phalpher, has been with the company since 2017. After initially joining the team as an Advisor, he was nominated as a member of the board shortly thereafter, before moving into his current role in 2018.

With nearly 15 years of work experience, Kunal brings extensive international expertise in the lithium-ion battery and renewable energy sectors to his current role. His wealth of knowledge has been a principled and significant asset to both Li-Cycle’s business development and corporate strategies.

Prior to joining the Li-Cycle team, Kunal worked for a residential solar company as the Director of Product Development and was the Director of Business Development for a lithium-ion battery manufacturer, both in Toronto, Canada. He brings broad, comprehensive international experience to his position as Li-Cycle’s CCO, having spent several years working in Germany in the cleantech sector.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Kunal has a reputation for being Li-Cycle’s biggest Raptors fan. He is equally passionate about travel and outdoor activities.

Warren Ali is the Senior Vice President of Innovation for the Automotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association (APMA).

As the automotive industry transitions and transforms from a Warren’s primary responsibility is to manage the APMA’s Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Testing and Demonstration Zone as part of the Province of Ontario’s Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN). He is Chair of the Digital Manufacturing Committee that is comprised of industry leaders from Global OEMs and Tier 1s along with SMEs and Global Leading Technology Startups. Warren’s venture capital and economic development experience in both the private sector and at the Federal and Provincial levels of government are key contributions to the APMA’s efforts to lead Canada’s auto sector towards the broader opportunities in Future Mobility. Warren has expanded the APMA’s reach and efforts beyond the automotive and auto tech sectors and is a member of the Board of Advisors to ventureLAB’s Hardware Catalyst Initiative as well as Canada’s Advanced Air Mobility Consortium. He has led Canadian trade missions and spoken at events around the world in leading mobility jurisdictions such as Germany, Japan, Singapore, the UK as well as across North America including Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Ann Arbor, Atlanta and Monterrey. Warren holds an Honours Bachelor of Science Degree in Statistics and Actuarial Science from the University of Toronto and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Schulich School of Business at York University.
Raj has been with Electrovaya for over 10 years and has been involved with every aspect of the business from cell manufacturing, engineering activities and business development. Raj is currently responsible for Electrovaya’s overall operations and he oversees the business development and manufacturing functions at the company. With a Ph.D in Nanotechnology from the University of Barcelona, Soroush is a serial entrepreneur and the founder of NanoXplore. He has been the President & CEO since 2011 and serves as a director on the board of directors. He is an acknowledged expert in the field of graphene and co-author of “Graphene Technology From Laboratory to Fabrication” published by Wiley & Co in 2016. More recently, he became the CEO of VoltaXplore, an electric vehicle battery manufacturing company.

VoltaXplore, an electric vehicle battery manufacturing company, is a newly announced joint venture between NanoXplore and Martinrea. VoltaXplore intends to build and commission a 10GWh battery cell manufacturing facility in Canada. Graphene-enhanced batteries are more sustainable, charge faster and are safer to operate. The growth of the electric vehicle market is a game changer in regards to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and graphene is playing an important role in this transition.
Kostyantyn Khomutov is a Co-Founder and the Chief Executive Officer of GBatteries, an advanced battery technology company. He is an Aerospace Engineer and a seasoned executive with nearly 20 years of experience in the global technology sector. Kostyantyn’s focus is to pioneer battery technology, while driving operational excellence.

GBatteries developed a software based charging protocol, powered by machine learning, to enable ultra-fast charging of Li-ion batteries with minimized degradation, which is one of the limiting factors of fast charging today. Dr. Eng. Micha� Grabia, Head of the Center for Identification Technologies in �ukasiewicz - Institute of Logistics and Warehousing and CEO of Vayasens Sp. z o.o . Research worker and academic lecturer. Author of many scientific publications and patents and a member of international organizations dealing with the development of standards and new technologies, especially in the field of IoT. Marcin Szelest has over 17 years of experience in the semiconductor and automotive industries. During his professional career, he worked in various positions in the R&D industry. He is currently leading the work of the group dealing with in-vehicle perception systems. He holds a PhD degree in electronics and is currently Chairman of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society in Poland.
Entrepreneur, Co-founder and co-owner of Exact Systems Group. Pawe� Gos has been President of the Management Board of Exact Systems for 15 years. The company operates in 13 countries and delegates over 5500 Quality Inspectors daily to 900 production plants around the world. He is the creator and one of the people responsible for the development of quality control services in Poland. As a proactive person in the automotive industry he has been appointed as an expert of the Polish Chamber of the Automotive Industry.
