Comment by Małgorzata Zawisza, from the PAIH Foreign Trade Office in Chengdu, China

CIIE 2020

China International Import Expo (CIIE) has just ended in China. It is the largest import event of this type, inaugurated in 2018 by the President of China, Xi Jinping. The fair was visited by over 400 thousand professional buyers, and the total value of contracts concluded exceeded USD 72 billion.

China is the second largest outlet for the cosmetics industry after the US and has nearly a 13 percent share of the global market. Total retail sales of cosmetics in China reached a record value of RMB 299.2 billion last year, of which RMB 244.4 billion were skincare products and 55.2 billion was spent on make-up products (up 14.7 and 27.4% respectively year on year). In September this year, a further 16 percent was noted bringing cosmetic sales to the level of 29.6 billion RMB.

Therefore, the China International Import Expo (CIIE) fair could not be without the world leaders such as Estee Lauder, Lancome, L'Oreal, Gilette and Shiseido. Polish companies also had the opportunity to appear at this event as part of a special stand organized by the Polish Investment and Trade Agency. The following companies were presented on the national stand: Miraculum, Coloris, Verona, Ziaja, Phenome, Yasumi, Salvane, Jelp, Nature Queen and La Vie Skin.

Although the ongoing pandemic did not thwart the organizers plans for the fair to take place physically, it did however, introduced many changes in trends and methods of communication. First of all, the companies were mainly represented by their Chinese partners or distributors and a large part of the trade talks took place online. Key Opinion Leaders (KOL), were as usual invited to promote brands and were treated like celebrities. The stands of leading brands which had the participation of KOL attracted crowds of visitors.
